Today’s post is dedicated to our December Brand Of The Month, Coast Sydney Botanicals!
We spoke with the wonderful Wei about her thoughts on the beauty industry and to find out more about the brand.
What is a typical day at Coast Sydney Botanicals HQ like?
I like to draw my inspiration from nature, and I have to say we are blessed in Sydney! I’m an early bird, so the day would normally start at 6 reviewing my emails, news, etc… Then a power walk in the nearby reserve, followed by hard work making our products. To finish the day I like to do some reading and social media, research on the benefits of rare botanicals, checking trending natural ingredients, etc… Our days are always busy but it doesn’t feel like work when you enjoy what you are doing.
How do you see the beauty industry changing with regards to cruelty free & vegan products? Do you think it could ever be completely cruelty free and vegan?
The future is green! It has been interesting to see that the cruelty free/vegan market has changed from the “niche” market that it used to be, to a more mainstream market; this is great news for all of us. Bigger brands like L’oreal are starting to take this “green” movement. Customers will find more choice, better products, and the increased public awareness of these issues will mean that non-ethical brands will be slowly marginalised. It most definitely could be completely cruelty free and vegan!
What does cruelty free and vegan mean to you personally?
I take pride in my products being as true to these goals as possible. That means a lot of research and checks when sourcing botanical ingredients, that means putting purity and quality first – and the result is that I’m confident in offering serums and perfumes that will help my customers stay true to their principles. In line with this, we do not test on animals.
What is a typical Aussie Christmas like?
Being a Malaysian-French family, living in the middle of all the beautiful Sydney local produce, our Christmases are filled with good food and great wine! Our typical Aussie Christmas is being surrounded by our 3 teenage daughters, overseas relatives visiting, all standing around a buffet of Asian and European delicacies! An extra bonus comes when we manage to have all this on one of New South Wales’ perfect beaches (I have a soft spot for Jervis Bay).
What would be your perfect day?
At the moment my perfect day is a productive one; building a brand takes a lot of time and energy and I love going to bed with the satisfaction that I’ve done my best!
I do need balance, so my perfect day has to include an early morning Yoga session or a late Pilates – as well as a nice relaxing dinner with my loved ones.
Name the biggest challenge you have faced with Coast Sydney Botanicals.
The biggest challenge so far has been to find time to keep up! My head is often a step ahead of my hands, I have a million ideas and I’m constantly chasing time to turn these ideas into reality! Fortunately, days have 24 hours and my mobile or notebook are never too far away, so I can make the best use of the “elusive time”.
What are some of the biggest issues / problems / concerns within the beauty industry at the moment, in your opinion?
Confusion. We all need to get more transparent, clear on what our products are made of and what benefits we expect for our customers. For nature-conscious shoppers, there are multiple terms, labels and gimmicky words being used in the beauty industry that don’t mean anything to them! This is why we are using simple, meaningful terms and we clearly explain what our products are made of – no hidden nasties, no catch-all marketing.
What is your favourite Coast Sydney Botanicals product?
Oh, that’s a tough one! I will go for our new Nephelium collection, as it features a natural ingredient (rambutan peel) that we’ve worked hard to source (had to use my hubby’s French connection). The benefits on skin are spectacular!
What is your favourite non-Coast Sydney Botanicals product?
Santa Maria Novella’s toner. These are made in Florence, Italy, and are based on centuries old recipes developed by monks and nuns using botanicals grown in their backyard – what an inspiration!
What is your number one beauty tip?
Number one beauty tip is to take time to find what is right for you! Be open to new botanicals, be curious to research and try, and you will find your perfect match! We are happy to help you in this quest with tips and products available on our website.
