Today’s post is dedicated to our August Brand Of The Month, DEMES Natural Products.
We loved their Butter Me Up in Tangerine & Vanilla so much, that we couldn’t wait to include another product from the Canadian brand in our August beauty box.
We spoke with the lovely Michelle (the “M” in DEMES) about her thoughts on the beauty industry and to find out more about the company.
What is a typical day at DEMES HQ like?
Zero glamour.. It’s all hair-nets, aprons and gloves. Loud music on, and we are making/bottling/or packing products. Whether it starting a new bulk batch using gallon jugs, or bottling and labeling or prepping orders for shipment. The best part is, the lab smells great, always. 🙂
How do you see the beauty industry changing with regards to cruelty free and vegan products? Do you think it could ever be completely cruelty free and vegan?
The beauty industry is changing for the better. The cruelty-free movement is moving forward globally, and governments are also getting on board to ban cosmetic testing on animals. The vegan cosmetic movement is also growing, but the rate isn’t as fast. Companies are still using beeswax, eggs, milk proteins, and other vegetarian ingredients, but I am sure this will change for the better. Hopefully, one day, it will be completely cruelty-free and vegan, but it will take a huge market’s government (China, for example) to pass new law to ban cosmetic animal testing.
What does cruelty free and vegan mean to you guys personally?
It absolutely means that no animal is sacrificed for the purposes of our beauty and personal care. It is horrible to think that an animal can be tortured or killed for vanity.
Is Canada as cold as we think it is?
Ha! Yes, it can be very cold. But it can also get very warm. In Ottawa, our temperatures can flex from – 30 Celsius to + 30 Celsius – now THAT’s versatility!
What would be your perfect day?
A family getaway at a cottage or beach, outside in nature.
What is working within a family business like? (be honest!)
It is good and bad. Good because we can make sure that our products maintain quality, and keep to our beliefs (vegan, cruelty-free, eco-friendly). It is bad, because we’re working most of the time…weekends, too. A family business operates 24/7.
What are some of the biggest issues / problems / concerns within the beauty industry at the moment, in your opinion?
The continued use of toxic, unnecessary ingredients. There are far more banned ingredients in the EU than in North America, which is good. North America needs to review this list and take action. Also, another concern is that China, a major market, requires animal testing on cosmetics by law.
What is your favourite DEMES product?
Get the Funk Out – Eucalyptus Peppermint – This is one of the first products we made, and its versatility is amazing. Body, clothes, feet, hair, bed, sofa, freshener. But my family has also used it for hand sanitizer, insect bites and stings, and poison ivy. Multi-use! I love it so much, it was the first choice to send to the Golden Globes gifting suite swag bags.
What is your favourite non-DEMES product?
Kevin Murphy hair products. Absolutely smell divine, work, and PETA certified.
What is your number one beauty tip?
Using vegan oils for cleansing and hydrating. DEMES has its own brand, but there are many. Oil helps remove oil, and some oils do great for hydration.
A huge thanks to Michelle and DEMES for their comments and for collaborating with us. Click here to visit their website, and be sure to leave us a comment with your thoughts.
